A ZEAL OF

GOD

For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God. . .

Romans 10:2

Howard Barnett

In Exodus 6:2, AGod spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the Lord: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.@ God when speaking to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, had used the Hebrew name SHADDAY, which means powerful or almighty. He made it known to Moses that he wasn=t known by the name Jehovah to Abraham. But we find in Genesis (22:14), that Abraham called the name of the place where he substituted the ram for Isaac, Jehovah Jireh. To use this as a name for God cannot be correct, because it is impossible for God to lie. He was not known by the name Jehovah to Abraham!

In fact, he wasn=t known by the name Jehovah to anyone until the fourteenth century when writers began combining the Jewish consonants JHVH with the vowels of the word ADONAY, ALord@, which the Jews substituted for the proper name in reading the scriptures. The consonants of the word to be substituted are ordinarily written in the margin; but inasmuch as Adonay was regularly read instead of the ineffable name Jhvh, it was deemed unnecessary to note the fact at every occurrence. When Christian scholars began to study the Old Testament in Hebrew, if they were ignorant of this general rule or regarded the substitution as a piece of Jewish superstition, reading what actually stood in the text, they would inevitably pronounce the name Jehovah. It is an unprofitable inquiry who first made this blunder, probably many fell into it independently. The statement still commonly repeated that it originated with Petrus Galatinus (1518) is erroneous; Jehova occurs in manuscripts at least as early as the 14th century.1 Recent scholars, accordingly with but a few exceptions, are agreed that the ancient pronunciation of the name was Yahweh (Jahveh).

When Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, IAMTHATIAM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.2 >I Am@ in the Hebrew [Jahveh] is spoken as Yahweh.

God made it plain to Moses, that he had changed his named, from El Shaddai to Yahweh. The name Yahweh (JEHOVAH) in the King James was rendered with many titles. The name JEHOSHAPHAT (Yahweh judges), JEHORAM (Yahweh is high), JEHOIACHIN (Yahweh established); these along with the titles JIREH, RAPHA, NISSI, M=KADDISH, SHALOM, SABOTH, ELYON, RAAH, TSIDKENU and SHAMMAH, present the many wonderful attributes of the Aone@ God. But God, who had already changed his name once to further reveal his nature to Israel and provide covenant, promised through his prophets to change his name again. (The Jehovah witness people don=t like this).

Isaiah spoke of this coming name, AFor unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government (authority) shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.@3 Isaiah again declared, AI will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.@4 Isaiah was speaking in the future tense when he went on to say, AAlso the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord (Praise God, he added us), to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord.@5 Isaiah continued. AAnd thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.@6 And Isaiah wasn=t finished yet, ATherefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not. Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name: That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes. For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.@7

Bless you, Isaiah, for introducing AThe way, the truth and the life@.

AAnd the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.@8 The name which is above every name had arrived.9 The one Lord, and his name one,10 had been identified in the earth. Paul told the church that whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.11 Paul taught the early church how to pray and how to worship with his closing statement to the Thessalonians, ARejoice evermore (never stop). Pray without ceasing (never stop). In every thing give thanks: (Thank you Lord, for the hospital bed that let me witness to a man who needed you. Thank you, Lord, for weakness, because when I am weak I am strong.) for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.12

Without ceasing Lord? How? ASon, your spirit never sleeps@.
