THE FAMINE
I will send a famine in the land
. Amos 8:11Howard Barnett
The prophet, Amos, spoke of the time of spiritual famine with the words, "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it."1 Many, in the hour that we are walking in, think that they are "rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see."2 Believing the unanointed shepherds of form and fashion has deafened the ears and blinded the eyes of the faithful. They are not looking or hearing anything regarding the Fire of God. The carnal mind has been ever learning with a form of God, but denying the power thereof. God’s counsel to the church to buy of Him gold tried in the fire, has been ignored as a word for some future generation or that maybe this pertains to the Jews. Surely, God is not expecting his church to walk in the fire to purchase something, even if it is gold. Why Lord! I want raptured up into the cool air of I Thessalonians 4:7, to meet you on my terms. I don’t want my understanding to know that the air (AER in the Greek) means breath. Why it might lead me to understand the wind of the "upper room" which also means ‘breath’. Or even yet, to know that Holy Ghost means ‘Holy breath’. The blind prefer to be led by the blind, not seeing the approaching ditch. Preferring to work iniquity, rather than truth. Trusting their egos rather than God, as to their concepts of righteousness.
Many will say to Jesus, in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them; I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these saying of mine, and doeth them I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."3 Many have built sand castles with their doctrines. They have formed them with their hands to suit their eyes, guided by the precepts that have tickled their ears. It looks like rock, feels like rock, and it really is rock. It’s just not solid. It won’t endure the water of the truth. They guard their sand castles religiously, considering this offering of Cain to be pleasing unto the Lord. Surely, if it pleases us it will please God. Look how decently it is structured, Lord. Look how the people marvel at our works. We are ready for your approval Lord. Just look at what our doctrine has built!
"Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; the lord to that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."4 Now that the church is in the season that requires meat for the strength to sustain us in the coming tribulation, most are still drinking the processed milk of tradition, that denies the ‘present tense’ of Jesus. They are as the five foolish virgins that took their lamps and took no oil with them. (See Matthew 25:3-13) The wise had took the counsel of God and purchased the needed anointing for the coming Lord. The foolish looked at their purity and marveled at their lamps and even heard the midnight cry, but they were not ready. The anointing required to pass through this door requires the fire to be held in gold purified by the presence of the Lord.
Paul stated that he wasn’t ashamed of the gospel of Christ: "for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shown it unto them."5
In this day, while many have witnessed to the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the inward manifestations of the Lord being clearly seen, traditional eyes of form and fashion are denying this power of God. Likewise, many that have received Jesus on this level are denying the presence of the Fire. It doesn’t matter to the carnal mind how many prophets spoke of this anointing, the natural man with his natural senses, can only perceive natural things. The Bible teaches that God will reveal to the inward man the hidden things of God. We are guilty of looking outward, instead of inward, for the coming of the Lord. "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God."6 "Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise."7 "But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men apt to teach, patient; In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover (means ‘awake’ in Greek) themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will."8
As many of us were awakened by the baptism of the Holy Ghost, which revived our minds in regards to the gifts of the spirit along with the love and joy of the Lord; even so, as we experience the Fire that Jesus is bringing with his presence, we should experience a revival of direction regarding the coming of the Lord. The devil has builded up a mountain of misdirection to hide this knowledge from the saints and to prolong his lies in the earth. But Christ in us is the hope of glory. And greater is He that is in us than He that is in the world. We have received the knowledge of the truth, His name is Jesus.
