THE ROD OF GOD
Hear ye the rod. Micah 6:9
Howard Barnett
The Lord gave two signs unto Moses to use to free the Hebrews from the captivity of Egypt. The first was the empowering of the rod that he carried in his hand and the second was the power to make the unclean clean. The leprous flesh, signified by his own hand, would be cleansed by his presence.
The Lord said, "And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign."1 The Lord called these signs, voices.
Moses, in the presence of the fire of God, was given a commission to deliver the Hebrew people from their bondage in Egypt. Moses was chosen of God because he had an outstanding characteristic in the eye of God. Moses was the meekest man on earth.2 The statement that "He that is greatest among you shall be your servant"3, spoken by the Lord to his disciples, also was a condition that He saw in Moses.
Meekness is a condition of charity. Paul, when speaking to the church of Corinth said, "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. Doth no behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things."4 ‘Meekness’ could be exchanged for the ‘charity’‘ in these scriptures. These attributes are closest to the heart of the Lord.
Moses was intrusted with the authority of God and given the ‘rod of this authority’ along with the power to cleanse the unclean. The Lord knew that Moses, because of his meekness, would not abuse this authority. Moses’ very nature was obedience, and obedience is better than sacrifice.
When Moses and Aaron went before Pharaoh and cast down the rod, it became a serpent. The sorcerers were able to duplicate this miracle by casting down their rods to become serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. This consuming of the serpents, a symbol of the authority of God, was also to be a sign of the church in the latter days. Jesus said "these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."5
Many zealous people, desiring to show their authority in God, have made carnal this commission; trying to demonstrate their faith on a natural level and many have died. The authority of God is used to consume serpents, not play with them. Evidently they haven’t understood that these serpents are the seed of The serpent, the lies planted by the King Liar. Our authority, Jesus, is the fire that consumes. The serpents, lies or tares have been mixed with the righteous seed by the evil one, down through the ages. Paul said, "when I would do good, evil is present."6 But God had ordained a day and a time when the rod of His authority, with His angels, would consume the tares (serpent’s seed).
Jesus has granted the overcomer to share this rod of authority. "And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father."7 This taking up of the tares (the serpents) is a sign of cleansing, reserved for the faithful church who has held fast till His coming. When Moses picked up his rod, in the days of Pharaoh, his rod had consumed the serpents. Therefore, by lifting up his rod, he ‘took up the serpents’.
The psalmist, when writing the message in the second psalm said, "Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel."8 The writer was prophetically speaking of the many-membered sons, the overcomers who would receive authority from the throne room of Jesus. The psalmist warned the worldly authority to "be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him."9 Jesus, in his statement, "I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?"10 gives emphasis to the word ‘kindled’.
We see the authority used as correction, "If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; If they break my statues, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes."11
Paul had stated that "that wrath of God cometh upon the children of disobedience".12 Disobedience means unbelief. Many, because of the tares of Satan, have chosen to believe a lie. Lies are the source of unbelief. Once believe upon, then lies work damnation or misdirection. Those who believed that their water baptism also baptized them with the Holy Ghost, were misdirected. They were not able to obey God’s directions because they believed that they already had received what they really had not received. They had believed a lie. Those who chose to drink natural grape juice or wine have also believed a lie. Those who eat the church (the body of Christ) as a cracker have also believed a lie. Those who practice natural circumcision have believed a lie. Those who have denied women to become ministers have believed a lie. Those who look for natural clouds have believed a lie. Those who preach the curse of the law have believed a lie. Those who believe in three Gods have believed a lie. Those who believe in two Gods have believed a lie. Every lie that has taken root will only produce a tare. Tares then multiply by gathering other lies in to support themselves. The ground of faith is so cluttered with tares that the ground is darkened. Tares, or serpents, produce darkness.
"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."13
Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."14
Our goal is to follow Jesus, the Lamb, wherever He leads us, knowing that the reward of our faith comes from the chief shepherd. Jesus instructed us to "walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of the light."15
Many instead of walking forward in the purpose of God to produce overcomers to receive the rod of His authority, have chosen to sit down and the overcoming darkness has produced blind leaders of the blind. At last count there were more than four hundred directions crying out ‘we are the church’ and more being formed every day. But there was a people who kept coming out of a people, reaching for the high calling of God, manifesting the purpose of the church which was to bring forth a manchild who would rule all nations with a rod of iron; and knowing that this many-membered manchild would enter into the throne room of God and receive the serpent consuming rod and begin to march as the army of the Lord. The red dragon, with his host, has tried to prevent this anointed birth, but he failed because his darkness was unable to prevent the birth of this many-membered manchild.16 The manifestation of the sons of God has come.17 The woman, in this child bearing, has brought forth her salvation, "And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our god, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night."18 ‘Day and night’ refer to the ‘earth realm’.
The cleansing with the ‘rod of God’ and the anointing of the ‘high calling’ spoke of by Paul to those who would be counted worthy, will fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of faith with power. 19
